Rich in vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and carotenoids, these crops often outperform conventional vegetables in nutrient density. Their deep root systems and adaptability to marginal soils confer drought tolerance and support soil structure, while their integration into mixed cropping systems promotes pest regulation and nutrient cycling. Agroecological management of indigenous vegetables encompasses practices such as intercropping with cereals or legumes, minimal tillage, compost and green manure application, water-harvesting techniques and the maintenance of seed-saving networks for local germplasm conservation. Participatory breeding and farmer-led selection have further improved yield stability and phytonutrient content without compromising genetic diversity. Beyond their nutritional benefits, these species deliver ecosystem services—including pollinator habitat, carbon sequestration and microbial biodiversity—thereby contributing to climate adaptation and sustainable livelihoods. Despite their potential, challenges remain in scaling production, improving post-harvest handling and overcoming market perceptions.
