Physical activity in older adults reflects a complex interplay of biological, behavioural and social factors that together shape functional independence, quality of life and public health outcomes. As populations age globally, declines in muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness and balance become more prevalent, contributing to increased risk of chronic disease, falls and disability. However, the trajectory of activity change is not uniform: retirement, changes in occupational demands and evolving social roles often prompt shifts in daily movement patterns, with some individuals adopting more leisure-time exercise and others experiencing prolonged sedentary behaviour. Concurrently, physiological adaptations at the cellular level—such as attenuation of mitochondrial function and chronic low-grade inflammation—can be partially counteracted by tailored exercise regimens. Population studies reveal that socioeconomic status, gender and pre-existing health conditions modulate these dynamics, indicating opportunities for targeted interventions.
