Summary
Age-related declines in memory, attention and executive control pose significant challenges for healthy ageing worldwide. Physical activity has emerged as a modifiable factor capable of preserving or enhancing cognitive capacities in later life. Both observational and interventional studies indicate that greater engagement in moderate-to-vigorous activities, such as brisk walking or cycling, is consistently associated with improved processing speed, working memory and planning. Conversely, prolonged sedentary time appears linked to accelerated cognitive decline and increased dementia risk. Emerging evidence suggests that not only total activity volume but also the pattern of activity accumulation—whether as sustained exercise bouts or frequent short interruptions of sitting—may modulate neurovascular health, neurotrophic signalling and synaptic plasticity. Collectively, these findings underscore the global significance of tailoring physical activity guidelines to support cognitive resilience in older populations and inform strategies for public health and clinical practice.
