Summary
Physical activity is increasingly recognised as a critical component of comprehensive care for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Interventions span aerobic and resistance training, balance and flexibility exercises, delivered individually, in groups or via digital platforms. Regular moderate-intensity exercise has been shown to alleviate fatigue, enhance mobility, improve mood and slow functional decline, in part by promoting neuroplastic adaptations and reducing inflammation. Behaviour-change strategies, including goal setting and peer support, are integral to overcoming barriers such as fatigue, fear of falling and limited access to specialised facilities. The advent of wearable sensors and remote monitoring enables real-time feedback and personalised adjustment of exercise prescriptions. Collectively, these approaches underscore the role of tailored physical activity programmes in improving quality of life, reducing comorbidity risk and supporting long-term engagement across the MS disease trajectory.
