Summary
Physical activity encompasses a spectrum of movement behaviours—from light ambulation to vigorous exercise—that collectively influence cardiometabolic, musculoskeletal and mental health. Patterns of activity and inactivity vary by age, gender, culture and socioeconomic context, shaping risks for obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. Regular engagement in moderate to vigorous activity confers benefits such as improved insulin sensitivity, reduced blood pressure and enhanced mental well-being, while prolonged sedentary periods independently contribute to adverse outcomes. The advent of wearable sensors and mobile health tools has refined measurement of daily movement, revealing distinct chronotypes (for example, “early bird” versus “night owl”) and episodic activity patterns such as “weekend warrior” behaviour. Globally, inequities in access to safe environments, cultural norms and policy support underscore persistent challenges in translating evidence into sustained behaviour change. Multilevel interventions—spanning urban planning, workplace incentives and digital coaching—are demonstrating promise in boosting adherence and reducing sedentary time. An integrated understanding of how diverse activity patterns interact with genetic, environmental and psychosocial factors is essential for tailoring prevention strategies, guiding public health recommendations and optimising long-term health trajectories across populations.

A comprehensive systematic overview of studies in the Middle East and North Africa region synthesised data on physical activity prevalence and sedentary behaviour over two decades. Findings indicated that roughly half of all adults and one quarter of youth achieved recommended activity levels, with notable gender and geographic disparities. The analysis highlighted substantial heterogeneity in measurement approaches and underscored the need for standardised guidelines. Trends suggested modest increases in adult activity but persistent low participation among young people and females. The work called for more rigorous data collection in low- and middle-income settings and clearer recognition of sedentary time as a distinct public health target.

Weekend Warrior: A pattern in which an individual accumulates recommended weekly physical activity in one or two concentrated sessions rather than spreading it evenly across the week.
