Posttraumatic Growth and Resilience in Trauma Survivors
Summary
Posttraumatic growth and resilience describe complementary aspects of psychological adaptation following exposure to severe adversity. Resilience refers to the dynamic capacity of individuals to maintain or rapidly recover psychological equilibrium in the aftermath of trauma, drawing upon personal resources, social support and culturally embedded coping strategies. Posttraumatic growth denotes the positive psychological transformation that can occur when survivors actively engage in meaning-making processes, often characterised by enhanced relationships, a renewed appreciation of life, personal strength and shifts in existential priorities. Contemporary models emphasise distinct but overlapping pathways: while resilience often reflects successful coping and restoration of baseline functioning, growth implies surpassing previous levels of well-being through deliberate cognitive processing, social integration and narrative reconstruction of the traumatic event. Assessment of these phenomena employs both quantitative inventories and qualitative methods, recognising the role of culture, developmental stage and trauma type in shaping outcomes. Clinically, interventions that foster resilience and growth range from skill-based resilience training and peer-support groups to narrative therapies and community-based programmes. Emerging research highlights the importance of individual factors such as personality traits, reflective rumination and spiritual beliefs, as well as systemic factors including social cohesion, access to mental health services and dignity preservation. The global significance of this work lies in tailoring evidence-informed interventions to diverse survivor groups—from refugees and bereaved families to accident survivors—thereby informing policy and practice aimed at promoting long-term recovery and well-being.
