Traumatic events, whether acute incidents such as natural disasters, interpersonal violence or large-scale crises like pandemics, can precipitate a cascade of psychological responses. In the immediate aftermath, individuals often experience intense fear, helplessness or horror, accompanied by hyperarousal and intrusive recollections. Over time, a proportion of those exposed will develop persistent difficulties including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety and substance misuse, as well as cognitive disturbances in attention, memory and executive function. Neurobiological research has revealed that trauma can dysregulate limbic structures, particularly the amygdala and hippocampus, and impair prefrontal cortical control over stress responses. Psychosocial factors such as social support and coping style strongly modulate both acute reactions and long-term outcome. At a population level, cumulative exposure to conflict, displacement or systemic adversity contributes to intergenerational mental-health burdens, while resilience pathways highlight opportunities for preventive interventions and strengthened community resources.

Measurement invariance analyses confirmed that the instrument assesses equivalent constructs regardless of cultural context or language variations. Findings indicated that individuals with pre-existing anxious-depressive disorders scored higher on both dimensions, underscoring the importance of valid, context-sensitive tools in global trauma assessment and enabling more accurate identification of distress in diverse populations.

Technical terms

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): A psychiatric condition characterised by intrusive memories, avoidance of trauma reminders, negative alterations in mood and cognition, and hyperarousal lasting more than one month after exposure to a traumatic event.

Peritraumatic distress: Acute emotional and physiological responses occurring during or immediately after a traumatic incident, often predictive of longer-term psychopathology.

Measurement invariance: A statistical property indicating that a psychometric instrument measures the same construct to the same extent across different groups or contexts.

Rumination: Repetitive, persistent thinking about one’s distress and its potential causes and consequences, often exacerbating negative mood states.

Longitudinal study: Research design in which the same individuals are assessed repeatedly over a period of time to observe temporal changes in outcomes.
