Psychological resilience refers to the capacity of individuals to maintain or regain mental health despite experiencing adversity or stress. It encompasses dynamic interactions among biological, emotional and social factors that enable effective adaptation in the face of challenges. Coping mechanisms are the behavioural and cognitive strategies that people deploy to manage internal and external demands, ranging from problem‐focused approaches, such as planning and active problem solving, to emotion‐focused techniques, including reappraisal and relaxation. Research in this field has increasingly emphasised the integration of neurobiological processes—such as stress‐hormone modulation—with psychosocial variables like social support and positive affect. Frameworks of resilience now seek to unify traditional stress‐and‐coping models with emotion‐regulation perspectives, highlighting how adaptive regulation of affective responses underpins long‐term well‐being. Globally, resilience research informs interventions across clinical, occupational and community settings, with practical applications in mental‐health promotion, disaster response and public policy. Emerging evidence points to lifestyle and contextual influences—diet, physical activity, social networks and cultural values—as modulators of resilient outcomes. One investigation explored how the acute cortisol response to a standardised social stressor interacts with trait positive affectivity to moderate the relationship between cumulative life stress and current psychological symptoms. Findings reveal that individuals with robust cortisol reactivity and higher levels of positive affectivity show a decoupling of past stress from present symptomatology, indicating a synergistic buffering effect. Moreover, the protective role of cortisol reactivity emerges primarily among those with lower baseline positive affect, pointing to a complex biobehavioural mechanism by which emotional and endocrine processes jointly support adaptive functioning.
