Summary

Psychological resilience denotes the capacity to maintain or rapidly recover mental health when confronted with adversity. It is not a fixed trait but a dynamic process shaped by interactions between individual resources, environmental demands and sociocultural contexts. Core resilience factors include cognitive appraisal styles, emotional regulation, social support and self-efficacy, while biological substrates such as stress-response systems and neural circuitry modulate reactivity to hardship. Contemporary frameworks emphasise resilience as an outcome of adaptation processes that unfold over time, recognising heterogeneity in trajectories of recovery or decline. Advances in digital technologies have enabled scalable interventions to bolster resilience, and longitudinal monitoring methods permit the mapping of individual responses to real-world stressors. Globally, resilience research informs preventive public-health strategies, targeted psychosocial programmes and policy initiatives aimed at mitigating the mental-health impact of natural disasters, pandemics and socioeconomic disruption. By integrating psychological, biological and societal perspectives, the field aims to identify modifiable mechanisms that foster sustained well-being across diverse populations and settings.

Longitudinal analyses in Argentina during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed four distinct mental-health trajectories: a large resilient majority, two recovery groups and a continuously deteriorating minority. Younger age, female gender, pre-existing diagnoses and higher neuroticism predicted unfavourable outcomes, whereas baseline resilience mitigated distress. In France, weekly assessments during lockdown identified seven symptom profiles for anxiety and depression, with resilience emerging as the most prevalent trajectory. Positive psychological resources—wisdom, optimism, hope, self-efficacy and peaceful disengagement—prevented membership of symptomatic groups, and psychological flexibility mediated these protective effects. These findings underscore the diversity of adaptive responses and highlight key personal-resource targets for intervention in periods of collective stress.
