Summary

Quality of life in dementia care systems encompasses both the subjective well-being of people living with dementia and the experiences of those who support them. Effective care systems integrate clinical interventions, environmental adaptations and psychosocial support to sustain autonomy, social engagement and emotional health. Person-centred approaches prioritise individual preferences, cognitive capabilities and meaningful activities, while proxy assessments by caregivers and professionals offer complementary perspectives on daily functioning and mood. The interplay between patient needs and caregiver resources is critical: as the complexity of cognitive and behavioural symptoms increases, coordinated multidisciplinary teams and community networks become essential. Global initiatives are increasingly focusing on early diagnosis, biomarker-guided monitoring and tailored interventions that address diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts. Understanding trajectories of well-being and the factors that influence decline or stability enables policymakers and practitioners to allocate resources effectively, design targeted support for high-risk groups and evaluate the impact of novel therapies on everyday life.
