Summary
West Africa’s climate is governed by the seasonal migration of the West African Monsoon, a broad-scale atmospheric circulation that brings the bulk of annual rainfall between June and September. Rainfall variability in this region occurs on multiple timescales, from intra-seasonal dry spells lasting days to interannual fluctuations driven by ocean–atmosphere teleconnections in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific basins. Decadal shifts, linked to phenomena such as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, have modulated long-term trends, leading to alternating wet and dry epochs. These variations have profound implications for rain-fed agriculture, water resources and food security, as many rural livelihoods depend on timely and sufficient precipitation. Recent decades have witnessed an increase in extremes – both intense downpours and prolonged dry spells – amplifying erosion risks, undermining planting schedules and heightening vulnerability to drought. Climate change projections suggest a northward displacement of the monsoon gradient, with the Sahel becoming hotter and more erratic. Adaptation strategies now centre on improving seasonal forecasts, refining sowing calendars and strengthening water-management infrastructure to sustain crop yields and bolster resilience across diverse agro-ecological zones.
