Summary

Sleep plays a pivotal role in shaping emotional health and fostering resilience in the face of stress. Through coordinated activity across rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) stages, the sleeping brain consolidates emotional memories, downregulates negative affect and preserves adaptive vigilance. REM sleep appears to facilitate the integration of challenging experiences into broader memory networks, mitigating distress on recall, while NREM sleep, particularly slow wave sleep and stage-2 spindles, supports synaptic recalibration and sensory gating. Disruptions to these processes—whether through acute deprivation, fragmentation or targeted suppression—can amplify emotional reactivity, impair inhibitory control over negative thoughts and promote intrusive recollections. A growing body of work highlights both trait-like differences in sleep–emotion coupling and the potential for brief sleep interventions to bolster psychological resilience across clinical and healthy populations.

One investigation employed a short daytime nap following exposure to an analogue trauma film and found that participants who achieved REM sleep experienced fewer and less distressing intrusive memories, indicating that REM-dependent consolidation may protect against acute stress. Another study examined how the sleeping brain discriminates between threatening and neutral sounds, demonstrating that rough acoustic features of screams evoke stronger cortical responses and enhance sleep spindle power during NREM sleep, thus preserving an adaptive threat-detection mechanism even in diminished consciousness. Together, these findings underscore the multifaceted contributions of both REM and NREM sleep to emotional salience processing and resilient outcomes.
