Sleep is integral not only to physical restoration but also to the modulation of emotional states. Distinct sleep stages contribute in complementary ways: slow wave sleep promotes the downscaling of hyperactive limbic responses, while rapid eye movement sleep facilitates the processing and consolidation of emotional memories. Key brain circuits include the amygdala, which responds to salient emotional stimuli, and prefrontal regions such as the ventromedial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which exert top-down control to regulate affective responses. Functional connectivity between these regions reflects the balance of bottom-up emotional reactivity and cognitive regulation.
