Social Dynamics and Identity Politics in South Asia

The social dynamics of South Asia are shaped by a complex interplay of historical legacies, cultural pluralism and evolving power relations. Colonial and post-colonial experiences have left deep imprints on caste hierarchies, religious communities and linguistic identities, influencing patterns of inclusion and exclusion in public life. Rapid urbanisation and economic transformation have generated new forms of social stratification, while digital media and youth mobilisation have opened spaces for contestation and reform. Identity politics in the region often revolves around assertions of ethnicity, religion and caste, but is increasingly intersected by gender, class and generation. Political parties and social movements deploy these identities both to mobilise support and to negotiate resource distribution, sometimes exacerbating communal tensions and at other times fostering cross-group alliances. Transnational dimensions—diasporic activism, labour migration and climate-induced displacement—have further complicated the mapping of belonging and solidarity. Understanding this terrain requires attention to how social mobilisation, everyday practices of citizenship and state policies converge to produce both new opportunities for civic engagement and persistent challenges to social cohesion. The study of identity politics in South Asia thus offers vital insights into global processes of inclusion, resistance and the renegotiation of belonging in an era of heightened diversity and contestation.
