Political Theory and Political Philosophy
Summary
Political theory and political philosophy examine the fundamental questions of how societies ought to be organised, how authority and legitimacy are justified, and how concepts such as justice, liberty and the common good are understood. At its core, political theory engages both empirical observation of institutions and normative reflection on their purposes. It traces its origins to classical thinkers who debated the ideal constitution, considers the social contract traditions that sought to ground political authority in consent, and extends through modern analyses of rights, democracy and global justice. In recent decades, the field has broadened to encompass critiques of power, intersectional analyses of identity, deliberative models of public reasoning and comparative studies of constitutional design. Political theorists draw on history, sociology, economics and law to explore questions of distribution, participation and representation, seeking both to interpret political realities and to articulate visions for reform. As such, the discipline remains vital to understanding the challenges of mass democracy, executive power, social movements and transnational governance in an interconnected world.

Semi-presidentialism: A constitutional system combining a directly elected president with a legislature-accountable prime minister, differing according to the president’s power to appoint or dismiss the government.
Executive powers: The formal and informal prerogatives granted to the head of state and government for policy initiation, enforcement and administration.
Civil society organisation: A non-state, membership-based group—such as an association, union or faith community—that mobilises citizens for social or political aims.
Democratization: The process by which political systems become more open, participatory and accountable, often marked by free elections, pluralism and the rule of law.
