Social Dynamics and Well-Being in High-Rise Housing

The expansion of vertical residential environments has brought renewed focus on the interplay between architectural design, communal spaces and the social and psychological welfare of inhabitants. High-rise housing presents unique challenges and opportunities for social dynamics: dense stacking of private dwellings above shared circulation zones and communal amenities can foster both neighbourly contact and anonymity. Well-being in this context encompasses mental health, a sense of belonging and satisfaction with the living environment, as well as physical comfort factors such as air quality, noise levels and thermal conditions. Research highlights how spatial configuration, environmental responsiveness and management practices influence residents’ patterns of interaction, mutual support and perceived safety. A multidisciplinary approach—drawing on environmental psychology, urban design and public health—reveals concrete strategies for promoting social cohesion, from optimising semi-public areas to encouraging spontaneous encounters, to refining building services for climate-adaptive comfort. Globally, the effective design and governance of high-rise dwellings are critical for enhancing social sustainability and the resilience of dense urban communities.
