Summary

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition whose burden is disproportionately borne by individuals and communities with lower socioeconomic status (SES). Disparities in income, education and neighbourhood resources shape exposure to environmental triggers, access to preventive care and adherence to treatment regimens. Economic deprivation often correlates with higher concentrations of air pollution, reduced green spaces and overcrowded housing, each exacerbating airway inflammation. At the individual level, lower educational attainment may limit health literacy, diminishing capacity to recognise early symptoms and engage in self-management. Meanwhile, systemic barriers such as underfunded primary care services and uneven distribution of specialist clinics intensify risk of severe exacerbations and hospital admissions. These dynamics operate across the life course: early-life exposures in deprived settings can programme heightened susceptibility, while cumulative stress and comorbidities in adulthood amplify disease severity. Global trends underscore the universality of these patterns, albeit with regional variations influenced by social policy and health-care infrastructure. Understanding socioeconomic influences is therefore essential for equitable asthma control strategies and targeted public health interventions.

Recent studies have used sophisticated clustering methods to elucidate how intersecting socioeconomic and environmental determinants influence childhood asthma risk. A longitudinal cohort analysis employing latent class analysis identified distinct maternal–child profiles based on education, immigration status, neighbourhood deprivation and air quality. Children born to mothers in lower SES clusters exhibited significantly higher risks of asthma onset, allergic rhinitis and eczema, alongside increased rates of physician visits and emergency department attendances. This multifactorial approach highlights how composite disadvantage amplifies respiratory morbidity and health-care utilisation in early life.
