Neighbourhood disadvantage can reduce availability of supermarkets and increase the density of fast-food outlets, reinforcing dietary inequalities. Mediating factors—such as food literacy, household food environments and cultural norms—further modulate how socioeconomic disparities translate into nutrient intake and health outcomes. Globally, these influences contribute to unequal burdens of non-communicable diseases, underscoring the need for policies that combine fiscal tools, educational initiatives and environmental interventions to promote equitable access to healthy diets.
