Template-Assisted Electrodeposition of Metal Nanowires
Summary
Template‐assisted electrodeposition is a versatile bottom‐up strategy for fabricating one‐dimensional metal nanowires with precise control over diameter, length and composition. In this approach, a porous scaffold—most commonly anodic aluminium oxide (AAO), track‐etched polymer or block‐copolymer film—serves as a mould into whose channels metal ions are reduced under an applied electrical bias. By choosing potentiostatic, galvanostatic or pulsed waveforms, operators can modulate nucleation kinetics and mass transport, thereby tuning crystallinity, orientation and aspect ratio. This technique accommodates a broad palette of metals and alloys, including copper, nickel, cobalt, tin and multisegment combinations, and can be extended to heterostructures by sequential deposition or hybrid assembly. Key advantages include scalability to wafer-scale templates, compatibility with industry-standard electrochemical equipment and the ability to integrate nanowire arrays into devices for sensing, energy storage, catalysis or magnetic applications. Recent innovations have addressed challenges of pore filling uniformity, active‐pore quantification and branching architectures, while mechanistic studies of diffusion limitation, hydrogen evolution and stabiliser effects continue to refine deposition protocols. The interdependence of template geometry, electrolyte composition and operating parameters underpins global efforts to translate nanowire platforms into commercial micro- and nanoelectronic systems.
