Transnational Family Dynamics and Communication Technologies

Transnational families, whose members are dispersed across national borders, increasingly rely on digital media to sustain everyday intimacy, enact caregiving practices and negotiate changing roles. Communication technologies—from video calls and social networking platforms to messaging applications—have transformed the rhythms of family life at a distance, enabling both synchronous and asynchronous forms of connection. These media affordances shape how parents, children and other kin choreograph shared moments, exchange emotional support and co-ordinate care, even when spatial separation is prolonged by economic migration, restrictive mobility regimes or global crises. Research highlights how families negotiate power asymmetries, manage surveillance, and reconfigure gendered labour through long-distance exchanges. Mobile devices and polymedia environments facilitate ambient co-presence, a form of peripheral yet sustained awareness of distant lives, while video-mediated communication allows for improvised rituals that sustain moral obligations and emotional ties. At the same time, inequalities in digital access, generational divides in media proficiency and policy barriers to mobility continue to shape unequal experiences across diverse transnational contexts. The study of these processes illuminates global transformations in kinship, care arrangements and social resilience, offering practical insights for policymakers, technology designers and family support organisations working to mitigate the stresses of family separation.
