Trust Dynamics in Refugee Integration Contexts

Trust in refugee integration emerges as a multifaceted and evolving phenomenon that shapes individual well-being, community cohesion and the effectiveness of institutional support. Far from being a static attitude, trust unfolds across temporal, spatial and relational dimensions: it develops as refugees negotiate new social environments, as host communities and service providers demonstrate reliability, and as changing policy landscapes either reinforce or erode confidence. At the interpersonal level, trust is co-constructed through everyday interactions with peers, volunteers, educators and welfare professionals. At the collective level, shared rituals of welcome, language classes and community gatherings function as trust-building rituals that foster a sense of belonging. Institutional trust depends on perceptions of procedural fairness, transparency and cultural sensitivity in asylum adjudication, housing allocation and access to healthcare. Across these registers, trust is both an outcome of positive experiences and a prerequisite for refugees to engage in employment, education and civic life. Failures of trust—whether through bureaucratic opacity, social exclusion or episodic discrimination—can lead to isolation, reduced service uptake and long-term disenchantment. Conversely, early experiences of dependable support create a virtuous cycle in which refugees become active agents in their own integration, extend trust to new relationships and contribute to broader social cohesion. Understanding trust dynamics thus requires an interdisciplinary lens that combines qualitative insights into lived experience with quantitative mapping of social networks, and that recognises the interplay between individual histories, community practices and institutional frameworks.
