Summary
Video modeling techniques leverage principles of observational learning and social cognition to teach discrete and complex skills to individuals on the autism spectrum. In these approaches, a learner watches a filmed demonstration of a target behaviour or sequence performed by a model and then imitates it. Variations include peer-modeling, adult-modeling and video self-modeling, as well as video prompting, which presents step-by-step cues contingent on the learner’s performance. The visual clarity, consistency and repeatability of video methods make them especially suited to autistic learners who benefit from structured, multimodal input. Over the last decade, studies have documented improvements in social communication, daily living tasks, vocational competencies and academic skills. Key advantages include user-controlled playback, reduced need for constant therapist presence and ease of tailoring to individual profiles. When combined with systematic prompt fading and guided naturalistic practice, these techniques promote skill maintenance across contexts and generalisation to novel settings.
