Hypophosphatemia has emerged as an independent risk factor in general and critical-care populations, with low serum phosphate on admission or rapid phosphate shifts associated with increased mortality, longer ventilator dependence and prolonged ICU stays, highlighting the need for vigilant electrolyte monitoring.
