Organisational Planning and Management

Organisational planning and management encompass the structured processes by which firms set objectives, allocate resources and coordinate activities to achieve strategic goals. Increasingly, organisations draw on dynamic capabilities—the iterative sensing of market shifts, the seizing of new opportunities and the reconfiguration of assets—to maintain competitiveness amid volatility. Whether orchestrating global supply chains, driving innovation portfolios or navigating regulatory landscapes, robust planning and management frameworks ensure that resources are deployed efficiently, risks are mitigated and long‐term value is sustained.

Research from Nature Portfolio

A 2024 study of international semiconductor firms demonstrates how positioning within global innovation networks shapes corporate innovation outputs. Firms with higher centrality metrics—such as degree and betweenness—attain superior patent counts and product launches, while a moderate presence in structural holes yields the greatest performance gains, revealing a U-shaped effect of network engagement. In parallel, an analysis of industry–university–research institute alliances in China shows that R&D collaboration modes evolve over time, with different phases marked by distinct patterns of inter-organisational ties. Rather than a single dominant “superstar,” the network exhibits shifting configurations—first university–research links, then more balanced triadic partnerships—that drive technology diffusion and strategic adaptation. These findings underscore how deliberate network planning and the cultivation of collaborative roles support knowledge flows and sustained innovation performance.
