Superconductivity is induced in an accidental Dirac semimetal via the proximity effect.

Second-order topological insulators feature helical one-dimensional states located at crystal hinges. Running a supercurrent through such systems is now shown to lead to long-lived excited Andreev pairs due to their separation along hinges with opposite helicity.

Although carbon nanotubes are not superconductors they can carry supercurrents injected from superconducting contacts. Analysis of the tunnelling spectra of a nanotube connecting two superconductors reveals the detailed electronic structure of discrete entangled electron–hole states that carry the resulting supercurrent.

A new study shows that these long-range interactions can reach beyond the confines of a superconductor itself to coherently couple electrons in two normal metals either side of the superconductor.
