The Kibble-Zurek mechanism describes universal scaling laws in the dynamics across a continuous or quantum phase transition driven in finite time, but it is limited to slow quenches. Here, by focusing on a holographic superfluid disk model, the authors advance beyond this framework and uncover universal statistics of topological defects that holds for both slow and fast quenches.
