Although ketenes are important intermediates in chemical synthesis, the high reactivity of difluoroketene has impeded its controlled generation and practical application. Here, the authors report a transition-metal-free strategy for its mild, in situ production from difluorobromoacetylsilane, enabling cycloadditions, rearrangements and difluoroacetylations.
